Sisterhood and Community.
In a world that often pits us against each other, sisterhood is our sanctuary. The dominant social culture wants us to believe that there's only one spot at the top, one seat at the table, especially for women of color. It's a scarcity mindset rooted in Western supremacy, designed to make us compete for crumbs instead of building our own feast. When we buy into this belief, we're giving away our power. We're not showing up as our full selves, as the incredible, abundant beings we are. We're limiting our potential and the potential of those around us.
But what if we flipped the script? What if we embraced an abundance mindset? What if we believed there is more than enough success, more than enough leadership positions, more than enough time and money for all of us to thrive? How would we show up differently in our lives?
The Power of Showing Up for Each Other
I've seen the power of this firsthand. I was recently attacked in May, and the experience left me feeling vulnerable and shaken. The wounds were not just emotional, they were physical. My face was bleeding, my body was bruised, and I was in immense pain. I could have retreated, I could have hidden away, but I didn't. Instead, I called on my community.
The women in my coaching community showed up for me in a way that words can't fully capture. They held space for me, listened to my pain, and reminded me of my strength. They didn't just offer sympathy, they offered a lifeline. I felt their collective love and belief in my ability to heal, and something miraculous happened. The bleeding stopped. My physical wounds, which were slow to heal, started to close. The emotional pain began to subside. It was as if their collective energy, their unwavering support, created a container for my healing.
This experience reminded me that we are stronger together. When we show up for one another, when we lift each other up, when we create spaces of belonging and empowerment, we are weaving a network of support that sustains and inspires us to rise. We are acting from a place of abundance, knowing that when one of us shines, we all shine.
Weaving Our Network of Support
This is not just a belief for me; it is a practice. I dedicate my time and energy to creating spaces where this kind of connection can flourish. One of the most meaningful examples is my involvement with Cafecito Denver. This incredible network was started over 33 years ago by Rosemary Rodriguez, Lady Garcia, Denise Mayes, and Michelle Lucero. It began with a simple idea: women needed a space to hear each other. So, they started a morning coffee every Friday. Today, this network has grown to over 1,200 women in the Denver metro area. I volunteer my time and resources because I believe we are here for each other. When people are navigating difficult transitions, have lost a loved one, or simply need community, Capacito Denver is a place that welcomes them with open arms, no questions asked. We are there to listen and hold space.
I also host a monthly event called Cafecito, Caminata y Libros, where I bring women together to connect, go for a walk and build deeper relationships using prompts to spark conversations that allow women to open up about their lives. The magic of these gatherings is that they create connections where women feel seen, heard, and understood. So many amazing friendships have blossomed from these walks.
It's also important to me that we "cross-pollinate," connecting not just within our immediate circles but also across different groups. This is why I host a quarterly event called Chat & Connect. Every few months, we gather to talk about business and entrepreneurship. It’s not transactional. We focus on a simple question: "What is it that you bring to the table that can help others, and what is it that you need from us to build a stronger network?" This is about people first. It’s about building trust and community, because people do business with those they trust. It's a fundamental value I live by, people first, then business, then everything else.
Reflection and Actionable Strategies
It's easy to talk about sisterhood in theory, but living it takes work. It requires us to reflect on our own actions and biases. I've had my own moments of falling short. There have been times when I've let a scarcity mindset take over. I remember a time when I was so focused on a particular opportunity that I saw a friend as a competitor instead of a sister. This led to infighting and damaged our relationship. Or moments where I shut down thinking that an opportunity was not for me. The moment I realized my mistake, I took a step back. I had to acknowledge my own fears and insecurities that were driving my actions. I had to ask for forgiveness and work to repair the damage with my amiga and with myself. I learned the power of self-compassion.
These are the moments that teach us the most. We all have relationships in our lives, with our mothers, daughters, grandmothers, and colleagues, that may need healing. These relationships can hold us back if we let them. But if we can embrace a spirit of abundance, if we can show up for one another with love and support, we can heal these wounds and build a stronger foundation for ourselves and our communities.
This is why, at Ecosistema, we are committed to providing tools for women leaders to be the best version of themselves. We're going all-in to provide the coaching you need to show up for your teams and your community. We’ve learned that when we learn together, cry together, and grow together, we are stronger. The moment we separate ourselves from others is the moment we start suffering in silence. In the coming months, we will be opening up new spots for one-on-one coaching and will focus on growing our Coaching In Community Groups. We'll share more information soon about these opportunities to engage in the work that we do.
Let's ask ourselves:
What if we could build the strongest network of mujeres possible? Of community?
What would you create? How would you make that happen?
This month, let's commit to showing up as Hermanas, sharing our power, lifting each other up, and creating spaces where every single one of us can thrive.
