In the rush of everyday life, it’s easy to lose sight of the big picture. We go through the motions, juggling responsibilities and chasing fleeting goals, but how often do we pause and reflect on whether we’re truly living a life of purpose, joy, and no regrets?
For me, the journey to financial empowerment started in seventh grade when my teacher, Mrs. Jackson, introduced me to the stock market. While my family didn’t have the means for me to invest real money, I eagerly played along with "imaginary money," sparking a lifelong curiosity about financial growth. By 17, I had launched a tutoring business and saved $20 a week for an entire year. That small but intentional saving allowed me to pay for high school activities my parents couldn’t afford. At 18, I opened my first investment account with $1,000—an intentional step toward rewriting my family’s money story.
Years later, when I married my husband, we were faced with $40,000 in debt. Together, we worked intentionally to eliminate that burden, transforming our lives in the process. Today, we can invest, give back as philanthropists, and serve as examples of what’s possible for our communities. These experiences taught me the value of standing in my financial power, rewriting limiting beliefs, and intentionally designing a life of purpose, joy, and no regrets.
This journey is not unique to me—it’s possible for you too. Standing in your financial power means understanding where you are, deciding where you want to go, and building a plan to bridge the gap.
The first step to financial empowerment is understanding your current financial situation. Do you know how much you earn, save, spend, and owe? Do you have a clear picture of your net worth and where your money flows each month?
Facing your finances can feel daunting, especially if you’ve been avoiding the numbers or carrying shame around money. But there’s power in the truth. When you know where you stand, you can make informed decisions about your future.
To redefine my money story, I had to dig into my belief systems and figure out where I learned my money habits. For me, growing up in a family where money was tight meant absorbing messages about scarcity and self-sacrifice. While these beliefs helped us survive difficult times, they also created barriers when it came to dreaming big and building wealth intentionally.
Our relationship with money is often shaped by the stories we inherit from family, culture, and society. Perhaps you were taught to equate money with security or status. Maybe you absorbed the belief that financial success was out of reach or that having wealth conflicted with living a life of purpose. As women of color, we have been raised some of the limiting beliefs listed here:
Money is scarce and hard to earn: "Money doesn’t grow on trees."
Be humble and don’t ask for too much: "Don’t be greedy or ambitious."
You should put others before yourself: "Taking care of your family comes first."
Talking about money is taboo: "Money is a private matter" and my new favorite, “We don’t talk about Bruno (i.e. Money)”
Women shouldn’t be the breadwinners: "It’s a man’s job to provide."
We might value stability over ambition: "A steady paycheck is safer than taking risks."
Wealth is for other people: "People like us don’t become wealthy."
Debt is shameful: "Owing money is a failure."
These stories influence how we approach earning, spending, and saving—and they can be very limiting to us and what we can create. To create a life of joy and purpose, it’s essential to reflect on these narratives, challenge those that no longer align with your goals, and reframe your relationship with money to support the life you want to build.
What money beliefs did you grow up with?
What beliefs would you want to change to create new money stories/beliefs?
Most of us don’t dream of spending more time at the office or chasing material possessions. We dream of lives filled with connection, contribution, and meaning. We want to spend time with loved ones, pursue passions, make an impact, and live in alignment with our values.
Purpose is what gives our lives depth and meaning. It’s the “why” behind what we do and how we spend our time and resources. Building a life of purpose starts with understanding what truly matters to you and committing to designing a financial plan that reflects those priorities.
Take a moment to imagine the life you want to create—a life filled with purpose, joy, and no regrets. For me, this vision included financial independence, giving back to my community, and teaching my children to build their own financial legacies.
Ask yourself:
What truly matters to me?
How do I want to spend my time?
What legacy do I want to leave behind?
Your answers to these questions will serve as the foundation for your financial plan.
Once you know where you are and the life you want to create, it’s time to build a financial plan that bridges the gap. This plan is not just about crunching numbers—it’s about aligning your financial decisions with your values, purpose, hopes and dreams.
Set meaningful goals: Define what financial success looks like for you, whether it’s funding a passion project, traveling the world, or supporting a cause close to your heart.
What does financial success look like to you? What are the top three priorities you want your money to support (e.g., family, travel, education, giving back)?
Know your starting point: Fill out a basic needs and asset form to calculate your net worth.
What is your current net worth? (List your assets and liabilities.) What areas of your financial life feel stable, and what areas feel like they need improvement? Are there any surprises when you look at your financial picture?
Build an intentional budget: Allocate your resources toward what brings you joy and meaning, and eliminate spending that doesn’t align with your vision.
Does your current spending align with your values and goals? What expenses bring you joy or meaning, and which ones feel unnecessary or unaligned?
Plan for the unexpected: Life happens. You will face obstacles or challenges that might prevent you from achieving your financial goals (e.g., job loss, unexpected expenses).
What’s going to get in the way of you making your plan a reality? How can you prepare for these challenges in advance?
Build a strong foundation: Establish an emergency fund to protect your financial stability and keep your dreams on track.
Do you currently have an emergency fund? If so, is it sufficient to cover 3–6 months of expenses? If not, how can you start building one? What amount feels like a manageable goal to begin with?
Invest in yourself and your future: Whether it’s through education, entrepreneurship, or retirement planning, invest in opportunities that align with your purpose and long-term goals.
What areas of your life could benefit from investment (e.g., further education, business growth, retirement savings)? Are you comfortable taking calculated financial risks for growth, or do you tend to avoid them? Why?
Standing in your financial power is about reclaiming agency over your life. It’s about breaking free from scarcity, embracing abundance, and using your financial resources to align with your values.
Today, my children have their own investment accounts and manage their own money, and I’m proud to say we’ve built a life my family once only dreamed of. This transformation didn’t happen overnight—it took intention, planning, and a commitment to rewriting the narratives that no longer served us.
Imagine a life where your finances support your dreams, rather than dictate them. Where you spend your time doing what truly matters. That life is possible—with clarity, courage, and a strategic plan.
